Therapy of Diabetes

For patients with diabetes type 2 non-medication measures like diet, increased activity and weight loss play an important role in the therapy. In many cases these basic measures help normalizing blood glucose.

If these measures do not lead to sufficient success the patient has to go on oral drugs starting with one single substance. If blood glucose levels are not satisfying the patient will get prescribed a combination of different acting drugs.

If good blood glucose control cannot be reached by oral antidiabetic drugs even type 2 diabetics have to go on insulin.

When treating a patient with insulin it is a goal to administer insulin similar to physiological conditions. There are different kind of insulin therapies:

  • Prandial intake of insulin
  • Conventional Insulin Therapy
  • Intensified Insulin Therapy
  • Insulin Pump Therapy
